Preschool speech and language assessment

The Teddy Talk Test is a simple speech and language assessment that can be used by a range of Early Years Professionals with children who are 5 years old or under.  

  • It enables practitioners to identify a child’s speech & language development relative to their chronological age.

  • It supports practitioners in understanding where to start in order to support children's speech, language & communication skills, including whether referral to Speech and Language Therapy is appropriate or not.

  • ​Links to the EYFS curriculum, the ECAT monitoring tool and the Healthy Child Programme.

The Teddy Talk Test includes a comprehensive instruction booklet and has been designed so that, having carefully read the booklet, the test is simple and straightforward to do. The more you do it the easier it becomes. Click below to find out more.

Theory into Practice

The Teddy Talk Test is based on the widely used principles of the Derbyshire Language Scheme (Madislover, M and Knowles, W 1982). The instructions increase in complexity as the number of "key words" increases.

It also links to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum, the ECAT monitoring tool and the Healthy Child Programme.
